Do you have to prime before going from eggshell finish to flat finish?

I will be painting my house this summer. I’ve examined the clapboards, and the majority are tight, but a few have some gaps where the upper and lower clapboards overlap. Should I caulk these areas, or are they needed for “breathing”? Thank you

My new house building contractor pulled a fast one on me. He used Pre-primed untreated finger-jointed and glued wood on a lot of my exterior trim. I have been fighting black mold and a brown sticky substance ever since. I think the sticky stuff is the glue coming through the
