How to Paint Metal Garage Doors

share

No one can deny how much a garage door improves the appearance of your home. As long as the design and style of your garage door go well with the house’s overall look, the curb appeal of your home will be off the charts. A beautiful garage door helps raise your home’s value, too.

However, as time goes by, your garage door will eventually show its age, and one of the earliest signs that it’s getting ahead in years is cracked, peeling, or faded paint. Considering how exposed to the elements a garage door is, it’s but natural for the paint to deteriorate. Although you can always just leave it be, it would be so much better if you do something about your garage door, because your home’s curb appeal will take a dive if you don’t.

Sure, you can go for a garage door replacement immediately if you want a new one, and you have the budget for it. But if you want to keep your old garage door, then repainting it is the only option available.

If you have a metal garage door, here are some tips for painting it.

Wait For Ideal Weather

Before you paint your garage door, make sure you do it when the weather is comfortable and dry. If it’s too hot, cold, or damp, the paint may not dry the way you want the finish to be.

Choose The Color

If possible, choose a color that’s similar or at least close to the original paint. However, if you want to change things up a bit, make sure you choose a color that goes well with the exterior aspects of your home. Avoid loud or extremely bright colors if you can.

Prep The Surface

The surface of your garage door needs to be clean, so use a cleaner or degreaser and a brush to remove dirt and all the remaining paint off it. It also needs to be smooth, so scan the surface for imperfections like scratches or rust and deal with them.

Apply A Primer

You need the surface of your garage door to have a smooth, even finish, so apply a primer specifically designed for metal first. It will also ensure that the paint will adhere better to your garage door.

Apply Paint

Once the surface is prepped and the primer is dry, it’s time to paint your garage door. For metal doors, the best paint would be high-quality, acrylic latex exterior house paint. Make sure the paint is mixed thoroughly, and the garage door surface is completely dry.

Remember, painting can get messy, so put masking tape on windows and accessories, as well as a drop cloth on the floor.

Painting your metal garage door requires time and effort, but the results will be well worth it!
