The easiest way is to mark out for the sides of the squares, with a pencil, then snap lines with a chalk line; use blue chalk and remove the excess from the string before putting it on the wall to reduce the amount of chalk used.

Now run tape along each line. Use Frog tape for good clean lines. Now paint with a mini roller.
