Kids Room Paint Ideas

Looking for kid’s room paint ideas? You’ve come to the right place. Decorating kid’s rooms in fun and unusual ways makes sense. Your children are only little once. Besides these areas are the perfect place to test out your artistic ideas

Murals

Murals are a great way to add personality to your child’s space, and they’re fairly easy, even for amateurs. You can buy kits that include stencils and make the process fool-proof.

Another option is to use a projector to transfer the image (a favorite cartoon character, photograph, or building, for example) onto the wall. Trace the image in pencil. Then fill it in with your favorite colors. More advanced artists can create elaborate freehand designs.

Some fun paint ideas for kid’s rooms:

  • Clouds
  • Airplanes
  • A picket fence and flowers
  • Your child’s name
  • Palm trees and surfboards for a beach theme
  • “Tribal” designs (fun in a teenager’s room!)
  • Butterflies
  • An under-the-sea theme

Tie-Dye

Take a cue from your favorite old shirt and create a tie-dyed effect. Choose three or four favorite colors and just freehand it!

Camouflage

This treatment is just at home in a girl’s room as it is in a boy’s. Don’t feel you need to stick to army green or fluorescent orange, either. Try several soft shades of blue, a handful of cheery pinks or even soft lilac.

Denim

For a look that’s as comfortable as your favorite blue jeans, try a denim faux finish effect. Layer dark blue glaze over a lighter base coat. Use a denim- or linen-finish roller to complete the transformation.

Double-Dipped Effect

Dividing the room in half with a chair rail and painting each half a different color creates a fun but still classy look. In a girl’s room, try cream on top and dark pink on the bottom; in a boy’s, two different shades of blue. Emphasize the split by using glossy white paint on the chair rail. For even more visual interest, paint the area below the railing with stripes! This paint job is an excellent choice if you don’t like redecorating frequently.

Stripes

Stripes are a good way to create a cohesive look when two kids share a room. Simply let each child pick one color!

Starry, Starry Night

Use white, silver, or even glow in the dark paint to create a starry night sky; your little one will feel like she’s camping! You can buy a kit that will allow you to create realistic- looking constellations; otherwise, get an astronomy book or just wing it. Don’t forget the moon!

An Educational Approach

Use stencils to apply different shapes to the wall; you can create these inexpensively by tracing the shape on a piece of low-tack contact paper, then cutting out the center. Arrange them randomly or in rows. Or take the same approach with numbers or letters.

Specialty Paints

Little ones like to draw on the wall? Paint a three foot by four foot section of the wall with chalkboard; add a funky contrasting border if you like. As your child grows, it’s a great place for him to write notes to himself; he’ll never forget a homework assignment again!

Magnetic paints are another fun option. Use these on walls or drawer fronts to create a gallery of options. Creating new displays is easy with the help of some cheap refrigerator magnets! Your child chooses the look.

Let Your Little One Help

Allowing your child to help choose the design or color of his or her room will go a long way toward making it feel like a personal sanctuary. You may have to put your foot down if you don’t want a five foot tall Dora mural or blue and orange stripes, yet you can suggest some acceptable kid’s room paint ideas and let your child have the final choice.

Don’t forget to compromise on the little things. You can always paint over it when they get older!
