Painting a Mural on a Wooden Fence

share

If your fence needs a little something extra to make it stand out from the crowd, consider painting a mural on it. For fences that surround your backyard, try painting murals on the inside to brighten up and enliven your yard. If your fence abuts a sidewalk, a mural painted on the outside can add charm and curb appeal to the home. Wherever you decide to paint the mural, use the ideas below to inspire your design.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

It may seem silly to paint a flower garden mural on your fence, but if your yard is too small for the type of garden you would like, or if your green thumb is actually brown, a garden mural is a great way to accent the space.

Begin by painting the section of fence with a light blue, sky color from the top of the fence to about one-quarter of the way to the ground. The bottom portion of the fence is where the garden vegetable plants and flowers will be painted. Add puffy white clouds to the sky and an occasional bird if you feel so inclined. For the plants, paint things that you would normally find in a garden. Tomatoes, peas, green beans, squash, watermelons, and strawberries are all good options for creating a varied and colorful garden design. The mural can span the length of the fence or just a portion of it depending on the space that you have available.

Horse Stall

Another fun idea for an outdoor mural is to paint a large barn with horse stalls. If you are confident in your painting ability, paint the heads of the horses over the stall doors. For those who are more hesitant, it is perfectly okay to paint the horse’s hindquarters and swishing tail. Take the time to draw the correct angles and add the details that will make the mural pop. The barn and horse theme, when done with patience and energy, will add instant visual interest and color to any fence.

Kids at Play

On the outside of your fence, paint a line of children playing or holding hands. Simple shapes can easily and quickly create the children’s bodies, making this a mural that almost anyone can successfully create. Paint children using a jump rope, playing jacks, reading a book, or playing in a sandbox. There is no end to the ideas for activities that can be depicted. To make the mural even more interesting, paint the children in life-size proportions, so that they look to be the size of actual kids. It will make passer-bys look again and smile when they see the mural children at play.

Painting a mural on a wooden fence is a fun way to spice up the look of your backyard or home’s exterior. Do not be afraid to try bold designs and colorful patterns when creating the look that you like. Everything from tropical palm trees to snowmen can be painted on the fence for a truly unique look.
