You can use what is called rag rolling, sponge painting, stippling, and more. These methods not only create a unique look but they are fun to do. If you want to dabble in these new painting techniques here are a few examples.

Sponge painting is done by all age groups. Children have been using sponges cut into different shapes, sizes, and letters of the alphabet in order to paint. Today, sponge painting creates a unique look and an amazing design for adults as well. First, you will need to place a base coating using a solid color paint to cover the surface. Try using a neutral color like cream, grey, or even beige. Once it is dry then you need to use a glaze on top. Next, take a slightly dampened sponge and begin dabbing the surface in different angles and with different pressure. Allow the paint to dry.

Rag Rolling is a technique used to create a crushed velvet look. To get this look, you need to first put on a primary coating on the surface you want to rag roll. Once the primary coating is dry, you need to take a rag and dip it into a glaze. Now roll up the rag into a long shape and then place it on the wall and allow the cloth to roll up some of the glaze so the primary coat shows through.

Stippling is another type of painting technique. You will need to place a base coating on the surface that you wish to paint. Next, you want to start at one side of the wall and paint 12″ strips that will run from the ceiling to the floor. Before the paint can dry, you need to take a feather brush and randomly to smooth over the spots of paint. You may need to rub off the excess paint from the brush from time to time.

Before you begin any of these painting techniques you want to make sure that you have a variety of paint brushes on hand and choose your base colors that you like the best. It’s your choice so choose what paints you like the best. It depends on your preference as well as what you are painting whether it is a wall or a piece of furniture.

You want to make sure that you use plastic to cover the areas that you will not be painting and use painters tape in order to hold the plastic in place and to cover the trim work and other areas that you want to avoid painting.

You may want to do some research before you get started so you are sure of which technique you want to use. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t turn out the way that you want it to. You may want to begin by doing a small piece of furniture like a stool or bedside table first to get the hang of the painting technique.
