I want to paint brick that has already been painted. Are there any extra steps or shortcuts for a fresh, non-caked up, finish?

Our fireplace and 1 wall of our master bedroom is brick and painted a dark reddish brown. I would like to lighten it up to make the room appear larger. Can we take the red tint out and lighten it with a stain only. What colors do you suggest on
