I have an unsealed cut stone fireplace which I want to paint white. What paints should I use? Can I use an emulsion like I used on the walls, and what type of undercoat should I use?

When painting any previously unpainted surface you should first use an appropriate primer. Stop by a local paint dealer and ask which is appropriate. This will save headaches later. Ask for the proper finish as well. Yes, this surface can be painted and if you were in the states I could give you a better idea of available products.
