We took down wallpaper that is 30 years old and the residual glue stayed on in a layer. While trying to get the glue off with water and a spatula, we found that the top layer of sheetrock is coming off. Can we do something like texturize over the glue and then prime and paint or do we HAVE to take off all the glue first (our first time working with wallpaper removal we painted over some residual glue that we didn’t know was there and it crackled the paint).
If we texturized then painted will the glue be a problem in the future?

You need to prime the remaining wallpaper glue. The primer will seal the wallpaper glue and stop any problems before they have a chance to start. I would use a quick drying oil based primer for this job. Kilz Oil Base or Zinsser Cover Stain will work great.
It is best to plan on priming all of your walls. Then do any repairs that are necessary. Now you can apply a texture, prime the new texture then paint as usual.
