The previously stained cedar siding, on a beach side residence, has been recommended to be painted with an elastomeric coating. What precautions should be taken when applying? Are there any specific preparation techniques to be taken in preparing the stained cedar prior to applying the elastomeric coating?

IF you will be applying an elastomeric coating I would strongly urge you to read and follow the label for the product.
I would be concerned as to application of elastomeric coatings as once applied you will need to stick with such coatings for all subsequent coats of paint.
