I stained new wood in my home and over the past year the wood that was behind the pictures on the walls are now much lighter. How do I get the color to match again. I tried to restain the lighter spots that was behind the wall hangings this did not help at all.

Short answer? Re-hang the pictures.
The reason for this is the sun light, no matter how little will darken the varnish. Overtime, the lighter areas will more closely resemble the darker areas but you will probably always see some outlines.
