I would like to stain my house a cape cod gray using solid stain. The house has cedar clapboards that had been previously stained with a linseed oil based dark brown stain. What is the proper prep to try and achieve the change in color? Will two coats after proper prep be enough to change the color? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Clean, clean, clean! Linseed oil based coatings are mildew magnets. Clean. Once you have cleaned the siding, solid stain should work great for your project.
Solid stains are just what the name says. Solid. They will allow the texture of the wood to be evident yet hide the original color of stain with the benefit of not having the heavy painted look.
Nice house by the way.
