I have a house with oil based paint and latex over it on the exterior trim – probably 3 coats or more in all. Several contractors suggest omitting the sanding step because their experience shows paint adherence is improved by doing this. What is your view?

If you are saying that you want to paint it with out sanding first… that’s typically the way it is done… sanding is not necessary or even helpful…
