How many coats of paint can sheet rock handle before you need to replace the sheet rock and start over? Our house is 55 years old. All the walls, ceilings & trim have had many coats of paint over the years, with primer only being used in the last 15 years. They need to be painted again but I’m worried that there’s just too much paint on them already.

Not to worry. Exterior, too much paint film can cause problems, but I am not aware of a situation where 55 years of coatings has caused a paint failure on interior sheetrock.
