I currently have maple cabinets with a gloss shine in my kitchen. I would like to paint the lower cabinets a dark chocolate brown and leave the upper cabinets? Will this look okay or do I need to paint all? The kitchen 10′ x 13′ with a sky light, so lots of day time light.

Actually having an island or the lower cabinets be a totally different finish is a really nice look. If you have a color that looks good with all the other elements then go for it! Just make sure you prep the existing lacquer or you will have a mess on your hands! Here is picture of an island that we did in a contrasting color.
