When taping, where and why should I use mesh vs. paper tape?

  1. Mesh drywall tape is best used on large cracks that need reinforcement. It will offer more strength to a questionable crack than paper tape. Its biggest drawback is its hard to float over and have a good smooth finish without producing a bump.

Paper drywall tape is easier to work with and easier to float out with drywall mud. A good choice for cracks in plaster that don't have any movement.
