Yes and no. Yes you can add oil based varnish to oil based paint. But, this will reduce the level of pigment making the paint more transparent. Success from adding varnish depends a lot on the paint as not all paints will react the same.

I don't recommend doing this as a gallon of paint is fairly inexpensive.
