I just finished stripping an antique trunk and the wood is very dry. I want to treat it with oil before staining. Is that possible or should I wait until after the stain and finish.

You can use a pre-stain conditioner to help control the stain penetration. The dryness of the wood will be taken care of with your clear finish. The clear can be varnish or tung oil or any other on the market.
