Paint a plastic archway in my home.

share

Bought this home that has archways leading into my living room. It had been previously painted. Wanted to repaint. After applying the paint I noticed that it had bubbles. I touched it and the paint just came off. It is peeling. It appears that the archway is made up of some kind of plastic. It has some form of spackling over it, has a gritty, sandy feel. How do I fix this problem, so I can paint it?

  1. I think the best way to fix the problem is to sand out the problem area. Re-mud & texture and use a good primer sealer before painting. It's a good possibility the spackling is breaking down from heat or humidity. You could also try just using a primer sealer on the existing surface but it sounds like you would be just masking over the problem.
