Paint Over Wallpaper

share

Walls were cleaned for me prior to painting, I then applied a wallpaper sealer to the walls, allowed over night drying then put two coats of acrylic with manufacturers drying time in between coats. A month later still tacky. Whats the cause and how do I remedy?

  1. You mean the paper was cleaned beforehand? With what? And what was that "wallpaper sealer"? And what brand of finish paint did you use? These things are not recommended practice! Start over now… Prime everything with a Pigmented Shellac Sealer Primer… use 2 coats if necessary… then finish coat with a HIGH GRADE PRODUCT (recommend Sherwin Williams Classic-99 Acrylic) use semi gloss…

  2. WARREN thank you for your answer. Not sure what they used to clean walls down with, previous owners did it. I usually use sugar soap [Selleys]. The system I used was [1] Pigment sealer 512, British Paints series 500. [2] Dulux Wash & Wear 101 Aquasmart Technology Acrylic Low Sheen 2 coats, as per the clients instructions. This system is acceptable for New Zealand's climatic conditions. I think someone has pulled the wool over my eyes, I went ahead and painted on hear say, I somehow don't think the walls were cleaned. CHEERS ANYWAY!!! THANKS WARREN. MERRY CHRISTMAS HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! MICHIGAN cheers John.NZ.

  3. How long did you let the walls dry after cleaning them. When you get wallpaper wet again it will reactivate the glue again behind it. And a shellac sealer primer works best on wallpaper. You can try and get some air going on them. Or just wait for them to dry, don't know how long it may take. Trying to go over it with something else right now isn't going to help. Good luck with it.
