I just purchased a place for my son in the town he is attending college. I discovered that the walls in living room and master bedroom were painted with this textured paint, feels like it has sand in it and is a very very dark colors (plum). What do I use to paint over this stuff. This is a big job I am afraid. Doesn’t have to be perfect this is for my 18 year old son but I don’t want it to look terrible either. I am sure that I will need to prime then paint… Will the paint even stick to this “sandy paint”. Should I use a certain paint? Like satin, flat?

You should have no problem rolling over it with any sheen; flat, satin or gloss, but I recommend flat… Just use a high quality product like Sherwin Williams Classic-99 Latex…
However… if infact what you are trying to cover is a "pop corn" finish (test by rubbing your hand over it… see if the little pieces come off) …then you will have difficulty rolling over it and you will need to mask off areas and spray it, using an airless system… Good Luck!
