I have a house full of stained woodwork and some is severely faded. The painters have told me just to sand it, wipe it with mineral spirits and polyurethane it with a satin finish to bring it back. I am wondering if I should consider using the stain and polyurethane product that is already combined for a one step catch all?? Any advice on dealing with the fade?

Using a "stain varnish" is a bit tricky and I do not advise this here… rather … sand all the woodwork with fine grade paper, wipe it clean with a dry rag… then stain just the areas where it is worn down to the bare wood, using a color stain (oil base) that will closely match the existing stain… after it drys, varnish all surfaces with a satin clear urethane product…
