I recently acquired an old pine table that my father in law had made approx. 30 years ago. It was refinished by a family friend years ago, but has remained sticky. Papers, napkins, table cloths stick to the surface and leave a residue. What would cause this and how can I repair it? I would like to use this as our dining table.

You need to remove the existing finish and reapply another finish coat. The cause could be the finishing itself, either an inferior product or one that isn't designed to dry hard. You will need to use a finish that will dry hard, like a good varnish or poly.
