I just read the info on painting or staining a fence. My question is: Why, if the fence is cedar? Before moving to MN from MA, I had a cedar fence around my outside pool. I never treated it. Left it alone! When I sold the house, it looked still looked great after 17 years. Why stain/paint/varnish?

Many grades of Cedar will turn gray from weather but you are right, basically… if left alone Cedar will generally be OK… however to effect durability as well as esthetic value and appearance, coat it with a high grade wood preservative or better, a spar varnish…
