It can't… not without using a Stripper or Refinisher to REMOVE all the varnish, and stain…
One alternative is to have a pro do a Faux Finish, that simulates what you want… it's a type of Antiquing… usually done on furniture but can be done on any REAL wood surface…
It is possible to get a new stain color over the existing finish but it isn't easy. Here is a set of cabinets we did. The existing finish was the original factory finish.
