Nobody talks about how to finish the sides of cabinets…the ones in my kitchen have laminate ends. I want to stain the doors and fronts, but what can I do with the exposed sides/ends?

Either do nothing or change the ends to a wood surface. Despite many claims to the opposite, I have never found a finish which will adhere to a laminate AND be serviceable.
I sanded my laminate cabinets, then primed them with kilz, then used a flat white paint, and finished with a walnut stain over that. I wiped the stain back off with a rag to achieve an "old" look. I love them! That was nearly two years ago and they still look great.
