How many times can I repaint a textured dry wall finish before it looses the texture effect or is there a technique to avoid this? Should I try to minimize the number of paint coatings?

Not certain any one will be able to place a definite number on coating a texture surface before you will lose the texture effect. The amount of paint applied per coat will determine this and that varies considerably with the factors associated with application.
A guess would place the number of coats as applied according to manufacturer's directions at 15 coats before there would be an obvious difference.
