Adding gel stain won't lighten your cabinets. It will simply add more color. You have two choices;

1- Best Option; Strip off everything including the stain and restain with a lighter color.

2- Paint your cabinets with a light-medium tan then stain with a gel stain. This is possible but difficult to do.
